Luna Cycle has proven itself to be the premier BBS02 dealer offering the best selection of kits with the best features at lower prices than you can find anywhere.
We cover most repair parts for all versions of the BBS02 past and future.
This is the highest performance version of this drive with upgraded firmware (custom made for Luna Cycles) and a controller with upgraded 3077 mosfets designed to handle the higher power this upgraded firmware will give you.
Do not let another USA dealer snow job you, there is no better or newer or faster BBS02 kit available.
This price is for knowledgeable builders and people willing to do their homework before they buy. If you fix things on your own bike and like tinkering then this kit is fine for you. It is a plug and play kit with everything you need except the battery and charger. If you have not installed an ebike kit on a bike before we recommend that you read the installation manual before you make the decision to buy this drive unit.
We are an American company located in Southern California. Many other people who offer this type of pricing are in China and the problem with China is the shipping costs tend to be very high (around $80 for the drive unit and much more for batteries). If you think it's expensive to receive something sent from China, wait until you try to send something back to China. When you buy an ebike product from a non-reputable vendor in China you are basically getting it without a warranty.
Regarding Controller and Firmware Hot Rod
Our kit includes a factory hotrodded controller different than most BBS02s purchased from China. The original BBS02 controller also had weak mosfets that would blow out easily when too much load was put on the system. We have had all our drives modified at the factory with more expensive and robust 3077 mosfets to make the controller handle more power without overheating. This makes it possible for us to change the firmware to a set up that allows you to utilize all peak 1300 watts this drive is capable of. We still recommend that you use a lot of common sense and keep your motor spinning fast by shifting down and keep your motor revving high when climbing. All electric motors prefer to spin at high rpms and you should keep this in mind and baby your bafang. We do not cover blown controllers under warranty. So if you overheat your controller by not following our operation guide, you will have to replace it.
The way this kit comes from the manufacturer it is very solid and hard to burn out. It is also difficult to get the kit’s maximum 1300 watts of performance which you can do by upgrading the firmware. We sell our kits to experienced builders with the firmware already upgraded. (Click here for the firmware programming guide)
We recommend you get the optional programming cable so you can tweak your own program settings. Their are many online guides which will help you do this.
BBS02 or BBSHD?
The Bbs02 is a better option over the bbshd in these cases:
when cost is a factor
when you do not need the extra power the bbshd offers.
when you do not need extreme hill climbing power
when you want a lightweight build.
When you want your drive to be 100% street legal
Also check out the 1000w BBSHD if you want more power than the BBS02 offers.
Bafang mid drive motor
25 amp controller (built into drive system) with upgraded 3077 mosfets
- Hot rod programmed for ultimate performance
- Bottom bracket compatible with 68-73mm bottom brackets (most standard bikes)
Your choice of 44t 46t 48t 52t chain ring
Ebrake handles which cut off the motor when depressed
The Bafang drive mounts in place of your current bike's bottom bracket and replaces your bike's crank set and front derailler if you have one.
Your donor bike must have 68-73mm bottom bracket width. That means this kit will bolt onto almost any bicycle. But not fat bikes. We have the BBSHD which is 1000W nominal 1500W peak and will work with fat bikes 100-120mm bottom brackets (BBSHD located here).
Many people have found that the Bafang can actually be mounted to many types of trikes, which can be fun since many trikes are not good candidates for hub motor kits.
Maybe you have an old donor bike laying around you want to convert, or maybe you are wide open to which bike to buy and install this kit on.
If you are also shopping for a bike to install this kit, that is perfect. We recommend you pick a bike that is known to be compatible with this drive and has no known issues. Ideally a build report has been written on our builder forum so that you can follow step by step someone elses building steps.
Here is a post on our builders forum with a picture collection with links to build reports you can quickly scroll through.
When you buy your drive the following info will help you pick which options are right for your bike.
This Kit includes everything you need to install the kit on most bikes except for battery and charger (which you can add at discounted price) all the batteries listed in the add as add ons are excellent choices for this kit. We have picked our most popular batteries as kit options and have made them available at a discounted price.
However you are not stuck to just these choices.
The displays are our ebike dashboard and all of them display the same information (watts, battery indicator, speed, miles traveled, etc) so in essence just pick the display that you like the look of the most, since they all have the same basic functions.
965- Standard display and recommend if you dont have a strong preference for something else.
DPC-14 A full color display (read more here) that is a $45 upgrade option. If you want the fanciest best looking display this is it.
963- the smallest most discreet display...mounts by the throttle. A cult favorite. $40 upgrade price.
961 - The bafang default display that is not fancy but works perfect.
We offer the Bafang with 3 different options for tooth count on the chainwheel.
Of course your gearing will also be determined by the rear cluster on the back of your bike.
But you need to choose which of these 4 options you want up front.
46 tooth will give you the most reliable set up that is also very torquey and better for off road hill climbing.
48 tooth will give you the middle ground.
52 tooth will give you the highest top speed (30mph) but is only recommended for street riding and you should really take care not ot overheat your controller when running this high by keeping your motor spending fast.
The Bafang has the option of connecting with your bicycle brakes and automatically cutting off power when the brake is tapped.
The kit will work with or without the brake sensors plugged in.
The Bafang kit comes stock with new brake handles that can replace your existing brake handles.
You also have the option of getting magnet sensors which allows you to adapt your existing brakes. This will help with users who have hydraulic brakes the sensors are not compatible with.
You can also choose to go with a brand new set of hydraulic ebrakes with the sensors built in.
If you are not sure about this one... pick the universal thumb throttle Thumb throttles are the safest and fit all bikes.
If you like motorcycle twist throttle, our custom Luna throttles are awesome.
Programming Cable Option
The Bafang has many setting which will effect the way the power comes on especially in pedals assist mode. We highly recommend this $20 option because it will allow you to customize in the future.
Their are many great programming guides available on the bbshd online.
Luna Install Tool option
There are some proprietary nuts on the bottom bracket of the BBSHD that can be a little tricky to install without the right tool (still very easy to jerry rig something)
However the Luna install wrench was made to make this task a snap and make taking on and off your drive easier in the future.
This is a $20 option. Luna manufactures this kit in their shop, and makes it affordable...the bafang install kit would cost anywhere from $65-$150 depending on which dealer you bought it from.
We include hardware to fit onto a 73mm BB shell (see below)
On a 73mm BB you may not fit the outer lockring on when using a BBS02 or BBS01. You also need to use the extra included washers, and the longer M6 x 20mm bolts. Use Loctite on the threads of the axle instead of using the second lockring (which really just acts as a jam nut) (this only applies to BBS02, BBSHD has long enough axle this is not necessary)

Passed the 2000 mile mark
Posted by Unknown on Jul 26th 2017
I purchased this kit in May of 2016 for my wife. We have not run this unit hard but I have not had a single issue pop up yet. We are running this unit with the Mini 52 volt cube. We have removed the throttle and are using PAS mode exclusively. Bike is legally programed. Can't complain, no cons yet.
I LOVE MY BBS02!!!
Posted by steve on Jul 18th 2017
I am not one to write reviews often but I felt that I had to write a review for my BBS02. I bought my kit a few months ago from Luna. This kit has literally brought me back into mountain biking after not getting on a trail and enjoying for years. I am 50 years old and have been having more fun than I have had since discovering mountain biking in my 20's. this kit mounted on my 98 stump-jumper is so freaking awesome. I get a great workout and ride for an hour and a half come home and feel energized. it is like all fun and no torture fest. I ordered the kit, a 52 volt 6 amp battery and man it really performs. I ordered the programming cable but have not messed with it at all yet. the programming provided seems fine for my needs. now that I have the hang of it. I ride trails on level 1 or 2 out of 5 and barely use the thumb throttle. I really like PAS. a lot of posts I read on ES say to avoid PAS but I think if you get the hang of it is more fluid than using thumb throttle. I am going to eventually tweak programming to suit my needs but for now I am totally happy. I think LUNA is a fantastic company and would encourage anyone on the fence to go for it and start riding e bikes!!!

I'm building my 8th bike. Of course I went to LUNA for a BBS02 750w. I've bought from several US & Chinese sellers. LUNA is the one with the most reliable service & fastest fulfillment. I prefer their programming with one slight tweek as I use internally geared hubs.
KEEP IT UP LUNA!!!!!!!!!
Luna's controller programming improved my old BBS02!!!
Posted by Shaun Disch on May 23rd 2017
My first BBS02 that I purchased locally in 2015 has been great (it has 6,500 miles on it and is still going strong after replacing the pinion gear) but this new motor is much more fun to ride due to the programming by Luna. I do prefer the power that the older motor gives me (The STAR CURRENT on the THROTTLE ASSIST PAGE when you program it with Luna's optional cable was 20% on my old BBS02 vs 10% on Luna's, I use 15% now. Remember, more power = more wear and tear.) But the new programming from Luna allows me to go as fast as I want in any PAS whereas my old motor limited the speed I could go. For example, I had to be in PAS 5 to get up to 18mph, but now I can get up to 27mph or higher in PAS 2 if I want! So I can save my battery by being in a lower PAS while still getting to high speeds. The difference is huge in battery life and enjoyability. So now both of my bikes have the same programming, the power of the old programming and the top speed of Luna's programming, and they are such a blast to ride now, especially with my new Luna battery (52v 13.5 Ah) that can take me 40+ miles at good speeds. So if you have an older motor I would suggest buying the cable from Luna and reprogramming it to higher SPEED LIMITS (not current limits!!!) on the BASIC PAGE until you are happy. I like 100% speed limit in PAS 1-9 which is the way it shipped to me from Luna. Thanks Luna, again!!!!
Very good kit for road bike
Posted by Robert Beaulieu on Feb 21st 2017
I installed my BBS02 with Dolphin 52v 13.5ah on a road (racing bike). I can now go very fast 55km/h (35m/h) on the flats. The handlebar diameter is larger than those of mountain bikes so I didn't install the throttle on it. It would be nice but not a necessity. I managed a season of riding without the gear changer motor cut-out. I will be ordering a Y cable to do this, but it is not a necessity. Luna cycle does not sell this unfortunately.
As for extra tools, I strongly suggest the Luna wrench for the BBS0x mid drive installation tool: it's a must have. You will also need a wire crimper and an electric multi-meter.
Also order the BSB1 stabilizer bar for you bike so the motor will be firmly in place without putting a ridiculous amount of torque on the motor mounting bolts. I will save you some aggravation. I think it should be in the standard kit or, at least, strongly suggested.
A Reliable Motor that Makes Biking Fun
Posted by Dave K on Oct 8th 2016
I've had the product for 5 months now, and I'm up to 1250 miles of road biking with my Trek hybrid. The BBS02 has been trouble-free and a blast to ride. I live in a hilly area, and I used to avoid the big hills. Now the hills are as fun as the flats: I set the motor in assist level 1 except when climbing, where I use the throttle for 15-second bursts to catch my breath. A Lekkie Bling Ring up front is a good match to a 9-speed rear derailuer: at a normal cadence, I can go anywhere from 8 to 25 mph. The shark pack battery is good for about 40 miles at this pace. One screw into the frame was not sufficient to hold the battery, so I ended up zip-tying the pack tight to the frame.

It is very good. I had a couple of problem.
1. My bottom Bracket was 73. So I needed longer bolts than they supplied. I purchase a 5 x 20mm bolt. Also needed about 5mm of spacers (4 small washers). Be sure to read about this. If you have a 73mm bottom bracket you will need these.
2. I also purchased the special tool bottom bracket tool so I could torque the the locknut down properly 30 lb ft. I highly recommend that you Torque thislocknut and the Crank arms to the correct torque.
You may also need blue locktight for a few parts.
The only other issue had to do with the connectors between the battery.
If make sure you have connectors. I purchase the ones xt90s connectors: http://lunacycle.com/batteries/connectors/xt90-s-connector-set-with-pigtails/
These seem very nice.
Now that it is all done it is working great.
Will probably purchase a 2nd one soon. Should be easier the 2nd time.

I've just finished 500 miles with my BBS02, and I love it. It plows up the steep hills around my house so I don't have to dread the end of my rides. I get to work faster biking than driving during peak commute times. On roads without bike lanes I can cruise with traffic at 25 or 30mph without difficulty, putting in the same effort I do to ride 10mph on a bike trail. I love getting exercise while I'm getting around, knowing that whenever I'm tired I can let the motor take over. It's been great!
Works great on my 29er Genesis Astra Cruiser with some things to take note of.
Posted by Ryan Loy on Aug 5th 2016
I got this 750w mid drive kit for my Genesis Astra and it works great, it does require some effort to get through the bottom bracket (even with plenty of lube) even though it fits the measurement requirements, but I believe this has something to do with how bottom brackets on how cruisers are made not the kit itself.
Once I had the mid drive in everything went smoothly and Ive been riding with no problems. A few things to note if you using this kit on a Genesis Astra, first your gonna need a battery bag since the Astra as a slight S curve in its frame, making normal frame mounting at the water bottle holder impossible without a lot of special work.
Secondly is the Astra has a 36T chain ring by default so going up to a 44T or in my case the 48T chain ring in this kit made pedaling without any assist on, or use or use of throttle more difficult since more teeth allows for greater speed but more difficult to pedal, and on a cruiser with its shape and wide tires I personally feel getting chain ring that has the same amount of teeth your bike naturally has with your kit a good idea if you want it to pedal like it did prior.
Good product overall
Posted by Alan on Jul 30th 2016
Good product overall. Well made, however it was missing screws so multiple trips to the hardware store. The biggest complaint were no instructions although it was easy to assemble, and the bike tools were hard to find. It should take about 2 hours to install, but removing the main crank can be a challenge. I bought the 13.5ah Carbon shark battery but only got 9 miles out of a 1/2 charge. It added
considerable weight for a limited range. Almost not worth the high cost due to the limited range. The new controller is nice, but the layout of the display desperately needs help. Important data such as battery display is small and less used data like which pedal assist is large. A user experience designer or graphic designer can improve the display considerably. Overall well made and easy to assemble.
Perfect For My Cruiser
Posted by Theron Chaplin on Jul 27th 2016
I purchased this with a 48V carbon shark battery to put on my 2016 Townie. Installation was easier than expected. Mostly I run in PAS 3 (out of 9) and cruise along around 15mph, and it's capable of 25mph on my setup. This motor is very quiet and seems more than enough for my needs.
Quiet power. Great kit
Posted by Unknown on Jul 17th 2016
Silent is the best description I can think of. Easy install, get the Luna install tool. This is a real nice electric bike kit. I put it on a tadpole trike and it went on very well. Much more power than I'll ever use.
Solid performance and value

Just completed Bafang BBS02 Build #7. Gets easier with experience. From my research this is the best eBike conversion kit on the market. The mid drive is way more serviceable and robust than hub motors, and you retain the benefit of the rear gear cluster. It takes a while to get to know the combination of motor, battery and controller. You will soon find your sweet spot for extended riding. I like to use the least assistance I need to cover the hills on my route; it doesn't hurt me to put effort into the trip (the more the better for my health!) The pedal assist mode kicks in smoothly and you feel like a 15 year old again. The thumb throttle is great for starting in traffic and occasional boosts up steep hills. Everyone I show my eBike to wants one (hence now on Build #7 as I have been helping friends and family get electrified). Rode my first Build #1 for a year and have never felt better. Passed it on to my son, who now uses it as his primary transportation. This is the future of personal transportation. Build #7 is on a Novara Buzz steel frame with disk brakes. 52v 13.5 ah bottle battery, Luna color display, rack and fenders. My daily ride.
BEST BBS KIT IN THE WORLD!
Posted by Joe Arrieta on May 27th 2016
Yeah no exaggeration, Luna Cycle hit a home run with there Luna Cycle BBS! My setup is the Trek DS 8.6, BBS02 750W, 52V 13.5AH NCRB for distance, th3
In my opinion Eric, Ashley and Josh are the current ebike winners with the Luna Cycle version of the Bafang BBS kits and their qualty battery packs. Look no further!
Lightest and most clean

This is a super product and the Luna full color display is a great compliment to its refinement.
The only bummer was that the "Biktrix" "Raceface" chain ring adapter (which is sweet) did not come with the special chain-ring mounting hardware. Everything else is pretty sweet
Awesome Product/Amazing Customer Service

First DIY build for the bbs02. Did a lot of research before the buy but still ran into some hiccups. Because there is no full installation video or instruction manual so was a little concerned. But majority of the build was fairly straight forward. Few questions I had, I asked the service team and they were very patient and informative despite my amateur struggles. The motor works great. Team is great. One suggestion for future reference is maybe prompt, advise, or even have the option for the charger adapter with the advanced luna charger. Didn't realize i needed it until I saw that mounting bracket for the battery. Cheap fix, just ordered it but would have liked the prompt. Other than that highly recommended both product and the service.
Smooth and Quiet
Posted by Dave K on May 8th 2016
I installed my BBSO2 kit on a hybrid bike, and I've been riding on the roads for 2 weeks now. I am surprised with how quiet the motor is. Everything works well, except I could only use one water bottle screw to mount the Shark battery pack. I found that I did not need the brake handles with sensors, nor the GearSensor. Perhaps because I'm riding on roads only these are not as critical.
I'd like to add to Felix's list of helpful things that should be included with the kit: a bunch of cable ties.
(Almost) The perfect kit package
Posted by Felix Holloway on Apr 29th 2016
Excellent kit, more bang for your buck than anything out there in this motor class. I do recommend buyers look into a narrow/wide chain ring like the Lekkie bling ring 42T. This will also help your motor to spin faster and provide more torque and eliminate derailment issues which really suck when your trying to enjoy your ride.
GET THE LUNA DISPLAY!!!! It's awesome, especially with the slow-creep forward feature (hold the "-" button and you will crawl forward, comes in really handy all the time).
All this kit needs to be perfect is to just include the option to add some small DIY build items. This would truly be perfect if there were the option to add the following into the order for the appropriate cost:
- Red/Black 14 AWG wire (maybe 5-10')
- XT-90S connectors
- Small packages of heat shrink tubing 14-10 gauge.
Would save newbies some minor headache.
All in all, an excellent package at the best market price you will find anywhere. Especially considering these are not stock and have been pre-hot rodded to maximize your build performance for the average builder who doesn't want to program it themselves.
EXCELLENT CUSTOMER SERVICE, best in class.

Received my motor, 48 volt 13.5 ah battery, and shift sensor 3 days ago.
Was fairly simple to install, except that the battery mount wouldn't line up with both water bottle mount holes. No biggie.
I live in Montana, so I took it to a major climbing trail to test it, and really wasn't expecting much out of the motor. The performance blew me away! I've never rode an electric bike before and was expecting an anemic piece of crap, the power was very good, the shift sensor worked great and the battery held up good. Last 2 days I've put about 50 hard mountain miles on it. It's made mountain biking fun again, and get a great cardio workout
Great price, high quality and POWERFUL
Posted by Theodore on Apr 16th 2016
Easy to install if you know anything about crankset and BB removal. You just need plenty of zip ties in order to judiciously run the cables. Paired with the mega triangle battery, this thing is scary powerful. I ordered the 48 tooth crankwheel but it seems that it could easily handle the 52-tooth version as I rarely need the largest freewheel cog. As it is, I can easily cruise on flat ground at 22 mph, the only downside is that cars are hesitant to pass when you are moving at that speed.
It takes a while to get the shifting down and learned that preparation is key--you should always be a gear lower than what the hill looks like otherwise the powerful unit strains the heck out of the drivechain and may spit your chain off if you are not careful. I also power down the PAS to 0 and then shift. Flat ground is not a problem and it is great getting some exercise and having the pedal assist and throttle when the going gets tough. The throttle is also great to get you going in intersections--just make sure that you're in one of the lower 3-4 gears.
So far I have put 31 miles on the unit and the battery gauge dipped one bar but went back up again. These 31 miles have been mostly up and down hills that I could not handle otherwise in Northern NJ.
The bottom line is that this quality Bafang gear is a new lease on life for my old heart and I love it! I dusted off the old Cannondale panniers and will now surely use my new rig for shopping trips.
BTW, the conversion was made on a '64 Raleigh Sport/Huffy Sportsman rebadge with recycled 27" Schwinn wheels and Shimano 5-speed freewheel. I needed a different handlebar in order to have room for all the controls. The only issue that I had was that there was not enough space between the chainstay and the spokes for the speed sensor. I had to zip tie it directly to the chainstay and ditch the mount.
